Background of the Study

In the contemporary business landscape, organizations increasingly recognize the importance of workforce development as a critical factor in maintaining competitiveness. Competency-based training (CBT) has emerged as an effective approach to enhancing employee performance and ensuring alignment with organizational goals. CBT focuses on developing specific skills and knowledge that are directly related to the competencies required for job performance (Anderson & Fenton, 2024). By concentrating on essential job functions, CBT ensures that employees are not only equipped to meet current organizational demands but are also prepared for future challenges.

GTBank, a leading financial institution in Nigeria, has adopted various HR practices aimed at improving employee performance, with competency-based training being one of the core strategies. In the context of Taraba State, GTBank faces unique challenges, including the need to develop employees with the necessary technical and interpersonal skills to effectively serve its growing customer base. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of competency-based training programs on workforce development at GTBank, specifically focusing on employee skill enhancement, job satisfaction, and organizational performance.

Statement of the Problem

Although GTBank has implemented various competency-based training programs, it remains unclear how effective these initiatives are in terms of improving workforce development in Taraba State. The effectiveness of such training programs in enhancing employee skills, improving job performance, and contributing to overall organizational growth has yet to be thoroughly explored. This study seeks to investigate whether the competency-based training programs at GTBank lead to measurable improvements in workforce development and organizational performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on GTBank employees in Taraba State, particularly examining the impact of competency-based training on workforce development.
